Got A New Husky Puppy? 2 Tips To Make Sure It Grows Up Healthy And Happy

If you just got a new husky puppy, then you can plan on having a lot of fun as husky dogs are very vocal and love to play. However, you do need to take proper care of your new puppy now and as they get older. Below are two tips on how you can do this so you can get started on your new life together.

See a Veterinarian

The most important thing you must do is to take your new puppy to a veterinarian. This is a great time to get established with a vet, so the doctor becomes familiar with your puppy now.

During the visit, the vet will weigh your puppy to ensure it is at the proper weight. They will then use a stethoscope to listen to their heart and lungs. The vet will also take your puppy's temperature — they may even take a sample of your puppy's feces to look for parasites, such as roundworms. The vet will press on your puppy's abdomen to feel for any type of bumps.

The vet will also set up a vaccination schedule with you, and likely start your puppy on their vaccinations during the first visit. For the first set, your puppy will receive the parainfluenza and distemper vaccination. During the second checkup, your puppy will receive a set of pet vaccinations for distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and hepatitis. This is known as the DHPP vaccinations. Another set of DHPP vaccinations will be given to your puppy at a later visit, as well as a rabies vaccination.

Get Exercise

Huskys are work dogs as their main job in the past was to pull a sled during cold winters. Because of this, you need to make sure your husky is getting enough exercise. This could include taking your dog for walks — but make sure you walk fast. Jogging would even be better. Huskys love to explore so take your puppy on hikes, starting out slowly then increasing the length of the hikes as your puppy gets older.

The husky breed also loves to dig, and they will dig out of a fenced area. So keep your husky in the house with you and always be with your puppy when it is outside. Providing an area for your husky to dig in your yard will be beneficial. Several different areas will be even better. You will be amazed at how quickly this type of dog can dig a hole. The digging is another way for your dog to release energy.

Your vet can give you more information about taking care of your new puppy, such as the best type of food your dog should eat, as well as the best treats to give them.
